St. Pope John Paul II death anniversary

Today marks the 14th year death anniversary of St. Pope John Paul II. Pope John Paul II made history in 1978 by becoming the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years. While he was Pope, he visited more than 100 countries to spread the message of faith and peace.

In 1981, there was an attempt on his life in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The assassin shot Pope John Paul twice which caused him almost fatal injuries. Fortunately, the Pope was able to recover from these injuries and later forgave his attacker.

On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II died at the age of 84, at his Vatican City residence. St. Peter’s Basilica was filled with more than 3 million people waiting in line to say good-bye to their beloved religious leader on his funeral (April 8).

He has a shrine in New York City, USA.
